Target Information
Aspartoacylase (ASPA), also known as aminoacylase II, is an enzyme encoded by the ASPA gene in pigs. The enzyme catalyzes the conversion of N-acetyl-L-aspartic acid (NAA) to aspartate and acetate. It is a zinc-dependent hydrolase that promotes the deprotonation of water to use as a nucleophile, similar to other zinc-dependent hydrolases. NAA is abundant in the brain, where hydrolysis by aspartoacylase is thought to help maintain white matter. The ASPA protein is an NAA scavenger in other tissues.
