Target Information
Cystathionine Beta Synthase (CBS) is a hydro-lyase that catalyzes the initial step of the transsulfuration pathway. In this process, the hydroxyl group of L-serine is replaced by L-homocysteine in a beta-replacement reaction, forming L-cystathionine, the precursor of L-cysteine. This catabolic pathway facilitates the removal of excess L-methionine and the toxic metabolite L-homocysteine. As a key enzyme, CBS drives the conjugation of homocysteine with serine to produce cysteine, marking the first step in sulfur metabolism. This reaction is crucial for maintaining one-carbon metabolic balance and influences a wide range of biochemical and physiological functions. Mice deficient in CBS develop severe liver abnormalities, including fibrosis, steatosis, and inflammatory responses. These pathological changes are closely linked to oxidative stress, characterized by reduced antioxidant enzyme activity and elevated levels of inflammatory factors in the liver.
