Collectrin is crucial in amino acid transport by partnering with amino acid transporters SLC6A18 and SLC6A19, influencing their cell surface presence and activity. It may also be involved in moving transporters SLC3A1 and SLC7A9 to the renal cortical cell membrane. As a transmembrane glycoprotein, Collectrin shares significant similarity with angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) and is predominantly found in the kidney, pancreas, and vascular endothelial cells. In mice, its functions include managing amino acid transport, insulin secretion, and various physiological roles related to hypertension and kidney disease. Mice lacking Collectrin exhibit significant aminoaciduria, with nearly no capacity to reabsorb amino acids, resulting in severe crystalluria and altered expression of amino acid transporter isoforms.
