Target Information
Total cholesterol levels have a strong connection to cardiovascular disease. Research indicates that alterations in the expression of key genes involved in cholesterol metabolism in the liver, such as TM6SF2, can influence total cholesterol levels in mice and potentially impact cardiovascular disease risk by modulating the expression of genes related to cholesterol metabolism. Both dietary composition and environmental factors significantly affect the total cholesterol levels in mice. For instance, a high-fat diet can significantly elevate serum total cholesterol levels, whereas a fiber-rich diet, like one containing flaxseed oil, can lower them. Additionally, intermittent exposure to hypoxia can increase total cholesterol levels in mice, possibly due to the activation of cholesterol metabolic pathways.
