Target Information
Melatonin, a hormone secreted by the pineal gland primarily at night, holds various biological roles in mice. It helps maintain normal biological clock function by regulating circadian rhythms and sleep patterns. Research has shown that melatonin influences the sleep-wake cycle in mice, particularly in non-seasonal species, where melatonin secretion is affected by the circadian light cycle, consequently impacting their behavior and physiological functions. Melatonin significantly affects the reproductive system by regulating sex hormone secretion and reproductive organ development. For instance, it modulates testicular function and sperm production by activating the hypothalamus-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis. Studies have found that melatonin can enhance testicular development in melatonin-deficient mice while regulating sex hormone levels, including testosterone and LH secretion.
