Target Information

Ornithine decarboxylase (ODC) catalyzes the first and rate-limiting step in polyamine biosynthesis, converting ornithine into putrescine, which serves as a precursor for the polyamines spermidine and spermine. Polyamines are crucial for cell proliferation and are involved in various cellular processes, from DNA replication to apoptosis. In mice, ODC plays multiple biological roles, including in cell survival, development, polyamine metabolism, tumorigenesis, and neuroprotection. As the initial enzyme in the polyamine biosynthesis pathway, ODC facilitates the conversion of ornithine into putrescine, a critical process for cell growth, differentiation, and apoptosis. The expression level of ODC in mice is influenced by several factors, including physiological stimuli such as testosterone and liver resection.
