Target Information

Epidermal growth factor-binding protein type B, also known as kallikrein 13, is responsible for cleaving REN2 at a dibasic site to produce mature renin. In mouse salivary glands, KLK13 (mGK13) acts as a serine protease, converting Ren-2 prorenin into active kallikrein (renin), a function it shares with other members of the tissue kallikrein family. Additionally, mGK13 processes pro-interleukin-1β (pro-IL-1β) into mature IL-1β. KLK13 exhibits high expression levels in mouse salivary glands, with lesser expression in other tissues. This expression pattern indicates a significant role for KLK13 in salivary gland secretion and inflammatory responses. Beyond its enzymatic role in producing bioactive peptides, KLK13 plays an important role in autoimmune diseases due to its antigenic properties.
