Target Information

β-microsperm protein (MSMB) is a small protein primarily found in semen, salivary gland secretions, and on various mucosal surfaces, including those in the gastrointestinal and respiratory tracts. MSMB is believed to inhibit sperm motility, modulate the immune system's response to allogeneic sperm, and offer protection against toxins. These functions suggest that MSMB plays a protective role in the reproductive process, such as preventing the immune system from attacking sperm. This protein is highly conserved across different species. In mice, MSMB expression levels are influenced by dietary conditions; for instance, a high cholesterol diet significantly reduces MSMB expression.
