Target Information

Malonyl-CoA is a derivative of malonic acid combined with coenzyme A. It is unable to cross cellular membranes, and no mechanism for importing malonyl-CoA is known. Research using mouse models has found that the levels of hypothalamic malonyl-CoA, determined by the activities of acetyl-CoA carboxylase and fatty acid synthase (FAS), serve as indicators of energy status and influence feeding behavior. The function of malonyl coenzyme A in mice involves the regulation of fatty acid metabolism, energy homeostasis, signaling, and multiple tissue specificities. Changes in its concentration affect several physiological processes such as fatty acid oxidation, energy expenditure, and insulin signaling through the regulation of key molecules such as AMPK.
