Target Information
Lipoprotein(a) is a type of lipid similar in structure to low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, commonly referred to as "bad cholesterol." Like LDL, Lp(a) deposits cholesterol in the arteries and can contribute to plaque formation. The study of lipoprotein a in mice provides an important experimental model and theoretical basis for understanding its role in human atherosclerosis. Through transgenic technology and multiple knockout models, researchers were able to explore in-depth the interaction between lipoprotein a and other lipoprotein metabolic pathways and their role in disease development. In transgenic mice, elevated levels of lipoprotein(a) worsen atherosclerosis and promote characteristics of vulnerable plaque in a sex-specific manner.
