Target Information
Sulfite oxidase (SO) catalyzes the oxidation of sulfite to sulfate, marking the final step in the oxidative degradation of sulfur-containing amino acids. In mice, the primary function of SO revolves around sulfur metabolism and redox reactions. Its essential role is to convert toxic sulfite into sulfate, thereby shielding cells from sulfite-induced toxicity. In mouse models, SO deficiency results in various pathological and physiological changes. For instance, SO-deficient mice exhibit symptoms such as impaired skin barrier function, neurodegenerative lesions, and growth retardation. These findings highlight the critical role of SO in maintaining sulfur metabolism and protecting against cellular damage.
