Target Information
Interleukin-2 (IL-2) is a cytokine produced mainly by activated CD4-positive helper T-cells and, to a lesser extent, by activated CD8-positive T-cells and natural killer (NK) cells. It plays crucial roles in immune response and tolerance. IL-2 binds to either the high-affinity trimeric IL-2 receptor complex (composed of IL2RA/CD25, IL2RB/CD122, and IL2RG/CD132) or the low-affinity dimeric IL-2 receptor (comprised of IL2RB and IL2RG). In mice, IL-2 is involved in a range of functions, including immune regulation, tumor therapy, autoimmune diseases, and neuroinflammation. It operates through various mechanisms, such as promoting T cell proliferation, enhancing NK cell and cytotoxic T lymphocyte (CTL) functions, and regulating regulatory T cells (Tregs). In a mouse model of HCV-related vasculitis, low-dose IL-2 treatment has been shown to restore Treg function, thereby improving the condition. Additionally, IL-2 is used to treat type 1 diabetes (T1D) by inducing the generation of natural Tregs (nTregs) to maintain peripheral T cell tolerance.
