Target Information
Hemopexin binds to heme and facilitates its transport to the liver for breakdown and iron recovery, after which the free hemopexin re-enters the bloodstream. In mice, hemopexin serves multiple functions, including clearing free heme, providing antioxidant protection, safeguarding the central nervous system, regulating immune responses, promoting iron homeostasis, and exhibiting anti-inflammatory and anti-fibrotic properties. Additionally, hemopexin is expressed in the mouse brain, offering protection following brain injuries. For instance, in cases of cerebral ischemia-reperfusion injury, hemopexin enhances angiogenesis and reduces neurological damage by upregulating heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) levels. Moreover, hemopexin can mitigate neuronal damage and behavioral deficits following cerebral hemorrhage.
