Target Information

Interleukin-1 beta (IL-1β) is a powerful pro-inflammatory cytokine. Initially identified as a primary endogenous pyrogen, it plays a key role in inducing prostaglandin synthesis, promoting neutrophil influx and activation, stimulating T-cell activation and cytokine production, enhancing B-cell activation and antibody production, and facilitating fibroblast proliferation and collagen production. It also supports the differentiation of T-cells into the Th17 subset and works in synergy with interleukin-12 (IL-12) to stimulate the synthesis of IFNG from T-helper 1 (Th1) cells. In mice, the functions of IL-1β are complex and multifaceted, contributing to the regulation of immune and inflammatory responses, pain perception, infection resistance, and brain function. When mice are infected with Pseudomonas aeruginosa in the lungs, increased expression of IL-1β enhances the host's resistance to infection. Additionally, IL-1β boosts resistance against certain pathogens by promoting macrophage activation and the release of pro-inflammatory cytokines.
