Target Information
Glutathione peroxidase (GPx or GSH-Px) (EC 1.11.1.9) belongs to an enzyme family with peroxidase activity. Its primary biological role is safeguarding organisms from oxidative harm. Biochemically, glutathione peroxidase reduces lipid hydroperoxides to their corresponding alcohols and converts free hydrogen peroxide into water. GSH-Px has an important antioxidant function in fish that protects cells from oxidative damage by scavenging reactive oxygen species. In addition, GSH-Px activity is multiply regulated by diet, environmental factors and gene expression, and it plays a key role in fish health, disease defense and environmental adaptation. In fishes, this enzyme plays a crucial role in combating oxidative stress, ensuring the well-being of aquatic life.
