Target Information
The insulin-like growth factors, derived from plasma, are structurally and functionally similar to insulin but exhibit significantly higher growth-promoting activity. Insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) is a key member of this group. It enhances glucose transport in bone-derived osteoblastic (PyMS) cells and is effective at much lower concentrations than insulin, affecting not only glycogen and DNA synthesis but also increasing glucose uptake. IGF-1 may also play a role in synapse maturation. In mice, IGF-1 has diverse roles, influencing growth and development, metabolic regulation, neuroprotection, cardiovascular function, and tumorigenesis. These functions are mediated via the interaction between IGF-1 and its receptor (IGF-1R), as well as through synergistic effects with other signaling pathways. IGF-1 and insulin are crucial for postnatal growth in mice, with mice lacking IGF-1 or its receptor exhibiting significant growth retardation and reduced stature.
