Target Information
Chymase is a key protease secreted by mast cells, implicated in the generation of vasoactive peptides, degradation of the extracellular matrix, and regulation of glandular secretion. In mice, chymase performs a variety of functions, including advantageous effects like modulation of inflammation, tissue remodeling, and cardiovascular protection. However, it can also exacerbate disease under certain pathological conditions. In the context of allergic airway inflammation, chymase released from mast cells in mice offers a protective effect by reducing airway hyperresponsiveness and lung inflammation. Within an intestinal infection model, chymase influences intestinal motility by degrading the vasoactive peptide VIP, thus affecting the rate of weight loss following infection.
