Target Information
Growth/differentiation factor 15 (GDF15) is a hormone produced in response to various stressors, signaling the brain about these stresses and triggering an aversive response, often characterized by nausea or loss of appetite. In mice, GDF15 has a wide range of functions, including neuroprotection, metabolic regulation, anti-inflammatory effects, and tissue repair. It plays a crucial role in neurogenesis. Research has demonstrated that GDF15 supports the survival and differentiation of neurons while reducing the proliferation of neural precursor cells. For instance, in the ventricular-subventricular zone (V-SVZ) of mouse embryos, the absence of GDF15 resulted in reduced neurogenesis, although it had little impact on the proliferation of neural precursor cells.
