Target Information
ATP-binding cassette sub-family A member 9 (ABCA9) is a transporter that may play a role in monocyte differentiation and lipid transport and homeostasis. As a cholesterol transporter located in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER), ABCA9 maintains intracellular cholesterol balance by facilitating its transfer from the ER to other organelles, such as the Golgi apparatus and mitochondria. Research has shown that overexpressing ABCA9 leads to decreased intracellular cholesterol levels, thereby inhibiting the proliferation of breast cancer cells. In mouse models, ABCA9 expression levels can be influenced by the loss of function of other ABC transporters. For instance, in Abcc6-deficient mice, ABCA9 mRNA levels are upregulated in the liver, kidney, and white adipose tissue, possibly as a compensatory response to the loss of Abcc6 function.
