Target Information
Fatty-acid amide hydrolase 1 catalyzes the breakdown of endogenous amidated lipids like the endocannabinoid anandamide (N-(5Z,8Z,11Z,14Z-eicosatetraenoyl)-ethanolamine) and other fatty amides, such as taurine-conjugated fatty acids, into their corresponding fatty acids. This process regulates the signaling functions of these molecules. Mice lacking FAAH (FAAH−/−) are unable to effectively degrade anandamide, leading to a significant increase in its concentration in the brain. This elevation enhances the activity of anandamide at CB1 receptors, resulting in typical CB1 receptor-dependent behaviors including reduced movement, analgesia, hypnosis, and lowered body temperature. Additionally, FAAH−/− mice display a pronounced anti-hyperalgesia phenotype in pain tests, demonstrated by prolonged latency to pain response in both the tail immersion and hot plate tests.
