Target Information
In mice, estrogen has multifaceted roles across several physiological systems, including the reproductive system, bones, muscles, cardiovascular system, and brain function. These effects are primarily mediated through binding to estrogen receptors (ER), specifically estrogen receptor α (ERα) and estrogen receptor β (ERβ). Estrogen influences reproductive organs such as the ovaries, uterus, and mammary glands via ERα and ERβ. For instance, a deficiency in estrogen can result in ovarian underdevelopment, reduced ovulation, and the absence of follicles or the presence of hemorrhagic cysts in female mice. Additionally, estrogen is crucial for mammary gland development in female mice, and its absence can lead to mammary hypoplasia. In male mice, the loss of ERα may cause spermatogenesis disorders, characterized by reduced sperm count, abnormal sperm function, and even complete infertility. While the absence of ERβ has minimal impact on male reproductive function, it can lead to decreased testicular volume and a lower sperm count.
