Target Information

Peroxiredoxin-1 is a thiol-specific peroxidase that reduces hydrogen peroxide and organic hydroperoxides to water and alcohols, respectively. It serves a dual role in cellular defense against oxidative stress by detoxifying peroxides and acting as a sensor for hydrogen peroxide-mediated signaling. In mice, Prdx1 is involved in various functions, including antioxidant defense, tumor suppression, immune regulation, modulation of inflammatory responses, and cardiovascular protection. Mice lacking Prdx1 experience severe hemolytic anemia due to elevated ROS levels in erythrocytes, leading to protein oxidation, hemoglobin instability, Heinz body formation, and reduced erythrocyte lifespan.
