Target Information

Cyp27b1 is a cytochrome P450 monooxygenase that plays a crucial role in vitamin D metabolism and the regulation of calcium and phosphorus levels. It facilitates the rate-limiting step in vitamin D activation within the kidney by hydroxylating 25-hydroxyvitamin D3 (calcidiol) at the C1-alpha position, thereby producing 1alpha,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 (calcitriol), the hormonally active form of vitamin D3. This active form functions through the vitamin D receptor (VDR). In mice, Cyp27b1 is essential for the conversion of 25(OH)D3 to 1,25(OH)2D3, primarily in the kidney, influencing mineral balance and bone health. Additionally, it plays a role in modulating inflammatory responses and other pathological conditions.
