Target Information
Elastin is a major structural protein found in tissues like the aorta and nuchal ligament, which require rapid expansion and full recovery. It plays a critical role in late arterial morphogenesis by stabilizing arterial structure through the regulation of vascular smooth muscle proliferation and organization. In mice, elastin primarily contributes to maintaining the elasticity of the cardiovascular system, the mechanical properties of the vascular wall, and the pathogenesis of cardiovascular diseases. The absence or functional defects of elastin can lead to significant cardiovascular changes, including arteriosclerosis, hypertension, and valvular disease. In elastin-deficient (Eln+/−) mice, the arteries demonstrate a reduction in elastic fibers and remodeling of the vascular wall, such as elastic fiber rupture and excessive proliferation of the extracellular matrix. These changes are closely associated with arteriosclerosis and cardiovascular diseases.
