Target Information
Cholesterol 25-hydroxylase catalyzes the conversion of cholesterol to 25-hydroxycholesterol, which suppresses cholesterol biosynthetic enzymes. It plays a crucial role in cell positioning and movement within lymphoid tissues, as 25-hydroxycholesterol is an intermediate in the synthesis of 7-alpha,25-dihydroxycholesterol (7-alpha,25-OHC). This oxysterol serves as a ligand for the G protein-coupled receptor GPR183/EBI2, a chemotactic receptor for various lymphoid cells. In Alzheimer's disease (AD) mouse models, increased expression of CH25H is closely linked to neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative changes. Research indicates that CH25H can exacerbate neuroinflammation and amyloid deposition by amplifying inflammatory signals. However, in some instances, CH25H might also reduce inflammatory responses by inhibiting SREBP processing.
