Target Information
Catalase catalyzes the breakdown of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) produced by peroxisomal oxidases into water and oxygen, thereby shielding cells from the harmful effects of hydrogen peroxide. It also promotes the growth of various cell types, including T-cells, B-cells, myeloid leukemia cells, melanoma cells, mastocytoma cells, and both normal and transformed fibroblast cells. In mice, the role of catalase extends beyond antioxidant defense to include metabolic regulation, tissue protection, and cognitive function. Variations in its activity can directly impact mice's health and disease susceptibility. As a key antioxidant enzyme, catalase effectively removes hydrogen peroxide from cells, preventing it from forming highly toxic hydroxyl radicals (·OH) through the Fenton reaction, thus reducing oxidative stress damage. For instance, in a myocardial ischemia model, overexpressing catalase significantly enhances a mouse's ability to resist injury.
