Resistin is a hormone that appears to inhibit insulin's ability to facilitate glucose uptake into adipose cells, potentially linking obesity to diabetes. It is a signaling protein secreted by adipose tissue, with functions in mice primarily related to insulin resistance, inflammatory response, and metabolic regulation. In mice on a high-fat diet, Resistin expression increases significantly, worsening insulin resistance. Resistin has notable pro-inflammatory effects, as studies have shown it can upregulate the expression of IL-6 and TNF-α and enhance its activity through a positive feedback loop, thereby inducing inflammation. Additionally, Resistin exhibits pro-inflammatory effects in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced liver injury, worsening liver inflammation by activating the coagulation cascade and promoting fibrin deposition.
