Target Information
Gastrin is a peptide hormone that promotes the secretion of gastric acid (HCl) by the stomach's parietal cells and supports gastric motility. Its release is triggered by the presence of peptides in the stomach's lumen. Gastrin can also stimulate gastric motility, promoting the mixing and emptying of stomach contents. Gastrin has trophic effects on the gastric mucosa, promoting its growth and maintenance. Researchers have investigated the effects of gastrin on gastric acid secretion and motility in guinea pigs. Because guinea pigs are used in the study of gastrointestinal smooth muscle function, the effects that gastrin has on that smooth muscle is studied.
