Protein kinase, AMP-activated, alpha 1 (PRKAA1), also known as AMPK α1, is an essential energy sensor that plays a key role in regulating cellular energy metabolism. It is the catalytic subunit of the 5'-AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK). Protein kinase, AMP activated alpha 1 is encoded by the PRKAA1 gene in horses. The gene encodes one of the seven possible subunits of a functional mammalian AMPK heterotrimer.
