Target Information

Prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) is a naturally occurring prostaglandin with oxytocic properties. PGE2 is synthesized from arachidonic acid by the action of cyclooxygenase (COX) enzymes. It is produced in various tissues, including the gastrointestinal tract, kidneys, and reproductive organs. PGE2 is involved in inflammatory responses. It contributes to the elevation of body temperature during fever. Large amounts of PGE2 can be synthesized by the chicken spinal cord.
