Specifications
Target Information
Reverse triiodothyronine is an isomer of triiodothyronine. It constitutes only about 0.9% of the thyroid hormones released into the bloodstream, with tetraiodothyronine (levothyroxine, T4) being the major component (90%) and T3 accounting for the remaining 9%. rT3 is produced by deiodination of T4. The enzyme iodothyronine deiodinase removes an iodine atom from T4, converting it to rT3. rT3 is considered biologically inactive because it does not bind effectively to thyroid hormone receptors.
