Target Information

Lipoteichoic acids (LTA) are a major component of the cell wall of gram-positive bacteria. They are polymers of repeating phosphodiester-linked polyols and may contain long chains of ribitol or glycerol phosphate. LTA is anchored to the cell membrane by a diacylglycerol. It influences the activity of autolytic wall enzymes (muramidases). Research has shown that antimicrobial histones from chicken erythrocytes bind bacterial cell wall lipopolysaccharides and lipoteichoic acids.
