Target Information
Hydroxyacylglutathione hydrolase, mitochondrial, is a thiolesterase that catalyzes the hydrolysis of S-D-lactoyl-glutathione to produce glutathione and D-lactic acid. The mammalian HAGH gene encodes both forms of glyceraldehyde-2-phosphate dehydrogenase, indicating that the gene is conserved throughout evolution. This dual translation mechanism is observed in various species, including birds, fish, and mammals. In mice, the HAGH gene's expression is closely linked to mitochondrial function, particularly in the liver, where it plays a role in regulating fatty acid β-oxidation and mitochondrial energy metabolism. In the mouse brain, HAGH gene expression is associated with neuroprotection. For instance, electroacupuncture stimulation can mitigate MPTP-induced dopaminergic neuron damage and restore normal metabolic levels by regulating the expression of proteins such as HAGH.
