Target Information
Citrulline is an α-amino acid that can be produced from arginine via nitric oxide synthase, from ornithine through the breakdown of proline or glutamine/glutamate, or from asymmetric dimethylarginine via DDAH. It can act as a metabolic intermediate in the urea cycle, a pathway that enables mammals to excrete ammonia by converting it into urea. Citrulline has multiple physiological functions in mice, including regulation of metabolism, protection of the intestinal barrier, improvement of exercise performance, and protective effects in disease models.
