Target Information
Pigment epithelium-derived factor (PEDF) is a neurotrophic protein known for inducing significant neuronal differentiation in retinoblastoma cells and serving as a powerful inhibitor of angiogenesis. It does not undergo the stressed (S) to relaxed conformational change typical of active serpins, which means it lacks serine protease inhibitory activity. In mice, PEDF's functions are primarily seen in neuroprotection, anti-angiogenesis, maintenance of the blood-retinal barrier, and anti-inflammation. These properties give PEDF considerable potential value in treating various conditions, such as retinal degenerative diseases, diabetic retinopathy, and tumors. As a robust anti-angiogenic factor, PEDF can inhibit angiogenesis in numerous diseases. For instance, in retinopathy, PEDF preserves retinal barrier integrity by inhibiting vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) activity, thereby preventing abnormal blood vessel formation.
