Target Information

Pentosidine (PTD) is a biomarker for advanced glycation end products (AGEs). AGEs are biochemicals formed continuously under normal circumstances, but their production accelerates under various stresses, especially oxidative stress and hyperglycemia. AGEs serve as markers of stress and can act as toxins themselves. There is evidence for a tissue-specific glycemic threshold for pentosidine formation, i.e., glycoxidation, in the lens.
