Target Information
Cystathionine gamma lyase, encoded by the CTH gene in mice, is an enzyme that catalyzes the final step in the trans-sulfuration pathway, converting L-methionine to L-cysteine in a pyridoxal-5'-phosphate (PLP)-dependent reaction. It cleaves the L,L-cystathionine molecule into L-cysteine, ammonia, and 2-oxobutanoate. The L-cysteine produced through this pathway is used in the biosynthesis of the ubiquitous antioxidant glutathione. In addition to converting L-cystathionine into L-cysteine, the enzyme also uses L-cysteine and L-homocysteine as substrates, though at much lower rates, to produce hydrogen sulfide (H2S).
