Target Information
Sterigmatocystin is a toxic secondary metabolite (mycotoxin) produced primarily by fungi of the Aspergillus genus, such as Aspergillus versicolor and Aspergillus nidulans. Structurally and biosynthetically related to aflatoxins, it serves as a critical precursor in the biosynthesis of aflatoxin B1. When livestock ingest grains or feed contaminated with this mold, sterigmatocystin exerts hepatotoxic and nephrotoxic effects, damaging the animals' livers and kidneys. Furthermore, it can be carried over into animal-derived foods like meat, milk, and cheese. Because it is a potent mutagen, teratogen, and classified as a possible human carcinogen, its presence in the agricultural supply chain poses a direct threat to food safety.
