Target Information
The H5N1 M2e is the 23-residue extracellular tail of the Matrix 2 ion channel, specifically derived from Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI). While internal M2 residues facilitate proton transport, this N-terminal domain is exposed on the virion and infected cell surfaces. Despite the extreme virulence and HA mutations of H5N1, the M2e sequence is highly conserved. This makes it a premier candidate for cross-protective "universal" vaccines, inducing antibodies that provide protection via antibody-dependent cellular cytotoxicity (ADCC) against avian-origin threats.
