Target Information
Swine gap junction alpha-1 protein (GJA1) is an essential protein for intercellular communication, encoding connexin 43 (Cx43). It is expressed in various tissues, particularly in the heart and testes. In the heart, GJA1 is crucial for the propagation of action potentials between cardiomyocytes. In the testes, GJA1 plays a key role in communication between Sertoli cells, affecting spermatogenesis. Additionally, the expression of GJA1 is regulated by multiple transcription factors, such as cJun and cFos, which bind to the promoter region of GJA1 to modulate its expression. Abnormal expression of GJA1 is associated with several diseases, including oculodentodigital dysplasia and cervical cancer. Thus, research on GJA1 in swine helps to understand its roles in physiological and pathological processes.
