Target Information
Guinea pig Interleukin-1 Beta (IL-1β) is a multifunctional cytokine that plays a critical role in immune responses and inflammation. It is synthesized as a precursor and activated by caspase-1, driving proliferation in thymocytes and activating various cell types. IL-1β is essential for host resistance to pathogens like Mycobacterium tuberculosis, promoting macrophage activation and enhancing T cell proliferation. It also induces the expression of other cytokines and chemokines, contributing to the inflammatory response. In guinea pigs, IL-1β is involved in the pathogenesis of tuberculosis, with increased expression observed in bronchoalveolar lavage cells from infected animals. Its biological activity makes it a valuable tool for studying immune responses and developing vaccines.
