Target Information
Chicken Natural Resistance-associated Macrophage Protein 1 (SLC11A1) is a key protein involved in the immune response to intracellular pathogens. It functions as a divalent metal ion transporter, primarily localizing to the membranes of late endosomes and lysosomes in macrophages. SLC11A1 restricts the availability of essential metals like iron to pathogens, thereby inhibiting their growth and proliferation. In chickens, SLC11A1 is associated with resistance to infections by pathogens such as Salmonella enteritidis. It also plays a role in macrophage activation by promoting signaling pathways like MEK/ERK, JAK/STAT, and NFκB through iron-dependent inhibition of protein tyrosine phosphatases. Abnormal expression of SLC11A1 can lead to increased susceptibility to infections and other diseases.
