Target Information
Bovine cathelicidin-1 (CATHL1) is a significant component of the innate immune system in cattle, providing a first line of defense against invading pathogens. This antimicrobial peptide is active against a broad spectrum of microorganisms, including bacteria, viruses, and fungi . In the mammary tissue of cows, CATHL1 is constitutively expressed and may play a protective role against mastitis, a highly prevalent and costly disease in dairy cattle . The expression of CATHL1 and other cathelicidin genes in leukocytes extracted from milk suggests their involvement in the early immune response to intramammary infection . Furthermore, the identification of multiple cathelicidin genes in the Bovine genome indicates a complex repertoire of host defense peptides that contribute to the overall health and well-being of cattle
