Target Information
Arachidonic acid is a polyunsaturated omega-6 fatty acid. When its precursors or the diet include linoleic acid, it is biosynthesized and can be stored in animal fats. Along with omega-3 and other omega-6 fatty acids, arachidonic acid supplies energy for bodily functions, supports cell membrane structure, and is involved in the synthesis of eicosanoids, signaling molecules with many physiological roles. In rabbit aorta, AA-induced diastole can be blocked by inhibitors of cyclooxygenase (COX) and lipoxygenase (LOX), suggesting that these metabolic pathways play a key role in AA-mediated vascular responses.
