Target Information

Choline O-acetyltransferase (ChAT) is an enzyme responsible for the reversible synthesis of acetylcholine (ACh) from acetyl CoA and choline at cholinergic synapses. In mice, ChAT primarily contributes to the biosynthesis of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine, supporting various physiological processes essential for the development, formation of synapses, and maintenance of nervous system functions. As the primary enzyme for acetylcholine synthesis, ChAT facilitates the combination of choline and acetyl-CoA to produce acetylcholine, playing a critical role in both the central and peripheral nervous systems. For instance, when mouse spinal cord and muscle cells are co-cultured, ChAT activity significantly increases, indicating the establishment of functional connections at the neuromuscular junction.
