Rat Hexokinase 1 (HK1) is a cytosolic enzyme that catalyzes the first committed step of glycolysis, converting glucose to glucose-6-phosphate. It is highly expressed in brain, skeletal muscle, and erythrocytes, where it couples glucose uptake to ATP production and protects against oxidative stress. HK1 binds to the outer mitochondrial membrane, integrating metabolic flux with mitochondrial integrity.
