Target Information
Mouse apelin (APLN) is a 13-kDa secreted peptide hormone predominantly expressed in murine adipose tissue, kidney, heart, and hypothalamus. It binds the G protein-coupled receptor APJ, activating signaling pathways that regulate cardiovascular function, fluid balance, energy metabolism, and angiogenesis. Critical for maintaining murine cardiac contractility, blood pressure homeostasis, and glucose tolerance, it modulates adipocyte differentiation and food intake. Dysregulated expression associates with hypertension, heart failure, obesity, and type 2 diabetes in mouse models, as impaired signaling disrupts metabolic and cardiovascular crosstalk. As a key mediator of systemic homeostasis, mouse APLN is a critical target for studying cardiometabolic pathobiology and developing therapeutics for cardiovascular and metabolic disorders.
