Rat Biliverdin Reductase A (BLVRA) is a cytosolic/nuclear oxidoreductase that converts biliverdin to bilirubin, the final step in heme catabolism. Expressed in liver, spleen, and brain, it uses NAD(P)H to drive the reaction, coupling antioxidant bilirubin formation with redox balance. BLVRA also functions as a serine/threonine kinase and transcriptional regulator, modulating inflammatory gene expression and cell stress responses. Its dual enzymatic and signaling roles make BLVRA an important target for studies of oxidative stress, heme metabolism, and cytoprotection.
