Target Information
Ghrelin is encoded by the GHRL gene in sheep. It is produced mainly in the oxyntic glands of the stomach, but also produced in the intestines, kidneys, hypothalamus and pituitary gland. It is aptly termed the "hunger hormone" due to its appetite-stimulating effects. Beyond its metabolic function, Ghrelin emerges as a fundamental regulator of mammalian reproductive functions, acting both centrally and at the gonadal level.
