Target Information
Vitamin D-binding protein is responsible for transporting and storing vitamin D, scavenging extracellular G-actin, enhancing the chemotactic activity of C5 alpha for neutrophils during inflammation, and activating macrophages. In mice, the primary role of vitamin D binding protein (DBP) pertains to vitamin D metabolism and bone health. In DBP-/- mice on a vitamin D-sufficient diet, serum total vitamin D levels are low; however, levels of other metabolites, such as free vitamin D and 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D, remain essentially normal. This indicates that while DBP plays a crucial role in maintaining vitamin D balance, it is not absolutely essential.
